What happens? Cannabis and simvastatin use the same enzyme in the liver for metabolism. Cannabis blocks this enzyme. Simvastatin needs this enzyme to get broken down and excreted, so when it can’t be broken down and excreted because cannabis is blocking it, it may build up in the body.
So what does that mean for people using cannabis along with simvastatin? It may be possible to experience side effects such as increased muscle pain and/or weakness. It is important to discuss this with your health care prescriber. It is important to inform them that you are using cannabis so they can appropriately manage your prescription medications. They may need to work with you to find the appropriate simvastatin dose, monitor liver function tests, and obtain a lipid panel to check for safety and efficacy.
